Paediatric Emergency Medicine is generally considered a high volume, low risk speciality. Serious injuries and life threatening illnesses are fortunately rarer than ever before.

The majority of cases seen day to day are relatively minor illness or minor injury and resolve with minimal investigation or treatment and usually without consequence.

However, despite everyone's best efforts within the hospital team, symptoms and signs are sometimes missed or their significance not appreciated. Often, poor outcome is simply unpredictable but on occasions may be found to be compounded by omissions in care.

Increasingly, contact is being made with regard to cases of 'missed' sepsis and these cases form a large part of my reporting workload.

With many years of full time clinical experience and 10 years of Medico-legal experience I am well placed to review cases and form an independent opinion on Emergency Department Standards of Care in children aged under 16 years of age.
